Canvas is the world’s first digital printing company and it’s a big deal.
The company, which makes and sells high-end, high-quality prints in many different styles and sizes, says it’s making a difference in communities across the world.
The first print, produced in Canada, has been seen by more than 150,000 people, with the company planning to sell more in the future.
The new print features a rainbow of colors and is a nod to Canada’s indigenous culture, said Canvas co-founder and CEO, Jordan Kallum.
He said it’s about bringing a fresh and contemporary perspective to printing and he hopes it’s an example for other communities.
“There’s so many different ways to make art,” said Kallampa.
“We think there’s a whole new world out there of what you can do with a digital medium.
We’ve got a lot of people in the art world that really want to be in that space and we think that this is a really good way to be part of that.”‘
The beauty of a digital print’ can be found in the colour palette.
“It’s a little bit more sophisticated,” said the company’s chief technology officer, Aaron Johnson.
The print is designed to be printed in ink, not paint.
“You can print it, it’s going to be done, and the next thing you know it’s on the wall,” said Johnson.
“And it’s not going to feel as expensive.”
He said that the colour-based design allows for a lot more variation in the final print, which is why it’s one of the fastest-selling prints in Canvas’s history.
It also means the company is able to sell directly to people in a way that’s easier than selling directly to customers online.
And, because it’s digitally printed, it makes it possible to use it for a range of different products and services.
Kallam said the new print will be available for people in Canada in March, and that the company will have other prints available by the end of the year.
The Canadian Press spoke to Kallumpa and Johnson, who said the design of the print is inspired by Indigenous culture, and their hope is that the new colour palette will bring people into the art space more fully.
The process was inspired by the Aboriginal artists and artists who created the first colour print, Kallamps’ daughter, Shauna, said.
“When we designed that one, we felt like we had to create something that was different and that was a bit more vibrant, and we wanted to create a rainbow colour palette that reflected that,” said Shauna Kallums.
“So it was a little more of a colour-in-space, colour-out-of-space thing.”
“We want people to feel like it’s something that they can buy and they can hang on their wall.”
It’s also important to keep in mind that the print’s production will be temporary, so there will be a lot to do and a lot that the artists and designers will have to learn.
“People are so used to a printed book, they’re really used to the feel of a physical book,” said David Fadness, president of Canvas.
“If you have a digital thing, the way you get that feels a little different.”
He noted that the art prints are sold exclusively through Canvas through online stores.
“The more digital that you have in the house, the more you have to do, the less space you have,” he said.
The printing process is a two-week process, with about 90 per cent of the prints completed in time for a full-blown exhibition, Kellman said.
They will then move to a smaller space and begin work on other works, but for now, Kells said, the company has focused on the prints for the Canadian public, because they’re the only way to get a better sense of what the artwork will look like.
